Who are you influencing?
It's Thursday and I just got back from lunch with a former colleague. This colleague asked me to go to lunch to ask my advice but I came away feeling like I was the one that benefited. This got me to thinking about other people in my life that have influenced me over the years. Many of these people influenced me through their examples of how they lived their lives and conducted themselves.
My Father - he was always working, providing for our family. He made time to help others in need. And he never quit anything he started his whole life.
My Mother - she was always kind, always smiling, always singing in the car and always encouraging me and building me up. She used to say "you can be anything you want to be if you just set your mind to it".
My Wife - for the past 30 years she has been my rock, my encourager, she gives me advice, and picks me up when I need it most. She makes me better than I am and loves me more than I deserve.
My Brother - through my school years he was my coach, my scout, my mentor and he pushed me to be better than I was and to play above my ability. He used to say "one day you will meet your opponent, will you be ready?". And also, "In this world, there are pretenders and contenders, which one are you?".
My Uncle Bob - he taught me to make time for family and those we care about. He always made time for me.
Wade, my first boss at DST - he was steady, consistent, organized, fair and told me the truth no matter what. He taught me to be thoughtful, even and planful.
Coach O'Neal, my high school football coach - he taught me to be mentally tough, never quit and to take responsibility for myself and my actions.
Jerry Mac, my karate teacher - he taught me to make my living with my head and to defend those that can't defend themselves.
I'm certain there are many others that have influenced me for the better over the years, I'm sorry if I didn't mention you, but know that I appreciate you.
All of this makes me wonder, who have I influenced or who am I currently influencing? Am I being a positive role model as I go throughout my day?
Who has influenced you? And who are you influencing?
